Lithios Hosts Massachusetts Climatetech Leaders, Launches Pilot and Manufacturing Facility to Scale Lithium Extraction in the Americas

US Department of Energy ARPA-E Deputy Director for Commercialization Dr. Luis Ortiz, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center CEO Emily Reichert, and Clean Energy Ventures Managing Partner Daniel Goldman participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tour.

Medford, MA, October 16, 2024Lithios, a developer of electrochemical lithium extraction technology, today celebrated the opening of its new Pilot and Manufacturing Facility with a press conference and tour attended by federal, state, and local officials; investors; and partners. The company plans to develop, scale, and deploy pilot systems for lithium extraction in the new 8,000-square-foot facility in Medford, MA. Reflecting a multimillion-dollar investment in Lithios’s growth within the state, the new facility signals the company’s commitment to bolstering the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’s already booming science and technology economy.

In recognition of Lithios’s commencement of operations, the day’s events featured a press conference and ribbon cutting followed by a tour of the facility. Speakers included notable leaders including US Department of Energy ARPA-E Deputy Director for Commercialization Dr. Luis Ortiz, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center CEO Emily Reichert, and Clean Energy Ventures Managing Partner Daniel Goldman. The City of Medford Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn cut a ceremonial ribbon to mark the facility’s opening alongside Lithios co-founder and CEO Mo Alkhadra, PhD and co-founder and Chief Scientist, Martin Z Bazant, PhD. Attendees were later guided on a tour of the new facility.

“Massachusetts is the global hub for climatetech because we are home to so many incredible, innovative companies like Lithios,” said Governor Maura Healey. “We are proud that they’ve chosen to launch their new Pilot and Manufacturing facility here in Massachusetts. Their efforts will create jobs, grow our economy, and make sure we are prepared to meet the demand of the clean energy transition.”

During the press conference, speakers highlighted the importance of high-impact electrochemical solutions for clean energy production, and how Lithios is continuing the longstanding tradition of bringing innovative manufacturing to Massachusetts. ARPA-E Deputy Director Ortiz also announced that Lithios has received the agency’s prestigious Spurring Projects to Advance Energy Research and Knowledge Swiftly (SPARKS) Award, which is given to early-stage companies exploring innovative new concepts with the potential for transformational and disruptive changes in energy technology.

“MassCEC is thrilled to invest in Lithios through our 2030 Fund,” said Emily Reichert, CEO of Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. “Lithium plays a crucial role in powering the batteries that will drive the clean energy transition, from electric vehicles to the storage of renewable energy. As global demand for lithium surges, innovations like Lithios’s technology are essential to meeting our clean energy targets in Massachusetts and around the world. The opening of the company’s manufacturing facility in Medford, a city with a strong industrial history, will spur new jobs and continue to strengthen the Commonwealth’s position as the place where climatetech startups can scale and succeed.”

Ranked first nationally in STEM graduates per capita, Massachusetts has more than 1.4 million residents working in the innovation economy—the highest state concentration—while Medford has a long history of supporting early-stage science and tech startups. Over the past six months, the Lithios team has more than doubled, and the company plans to leverage its recent $12 million in funding to continue recruiting talent to scale operations over the coming year.

“As lithium becomes an increasingly critical yet scarce component for electric vehicle and stationary storage batteries, Lithios is focused on unlocking more lithium sources to accelerate the energy transition,” said Mo Alkhadra, PhD, CEO and co-founder of Lithios. “We are grateful for representatives from the US Department of Energy ARPA-E, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the City of Medford for their support in celebrating the opening of our Pilot and Manufacturing Facility and look forward to their ongoing support as we bring accessible, low-cost lithium to the world.”
